Each week’s session lasts 90 minutes (note: Week 1 is a 2–hour session.). Karen will provide an audio recording for practice purposes prior to each week’s session; video recordings are provided for hammered dulcimer players. Each student will be assigned one session to play about 5 minutes for the class review from the previous week's topic, allowing everyone to hear different interpretations and the sounds of each mode on different types of instruments.

  • Week 1 : Introductions, Pentatonic scales for Major/Ionian, Dorian, Native American flute scale (minor pentatonic), the Indian raga Hamsadhwani, and the Japanese Hirajoshi minor pentatonic scales.

  • Week 2: What is a mode? What are the 7 modes in music? Major/Ionian scale and basic chord progressions; simple improvising ideas based on chords.

  • Week 3: Mixolydian scale and basic chord progression; how to change a tune from Major to Mixolydian.

  • Week 4: Dorian scale and two basic chord progressions. How are the Dorian and Mixolydian modes related? What is the difference between Dorian and Aeolian?

  • Week 5: Aeolian/natural minor, harmonic minor, and melodic minor scales and basic chord progressions.

  • Week 6: How does switching modes change the melody and chord progression? Lydian scale and basic chord progressions.

  • Week 7: Phrygian and Dominant Phrygian basic scales and chord progressions.

  • Week 8: How to tell what mode a tune is in. Overview and review of the entire course.

This is an integrated experience, with each week’s session building on those that came before.  Workshops are not offered separately. Get more details on the weekly class syllabus and assignments➚ on Karen Ashbrook’s website.

Important notices you agree to:

  1. The webinar registration form and payment must be received by 5:00pm EST Feb 19

  2. I must participate in playing/singing at least one example.

  3. I will set up a free Zoom account for the webinar (facilitator will send instructions).

  4. I must complete the class evaluation form at the end of the webinar to receive the take-home information.

When you register, you will be asked if you are flexible in your choice of time track. If you are able to attend either track’s dates and times, you might be contacted close to the first week’s class to specify which of the tracks is more beneficial for the class balance of attendance.

Late registration: To avoid a late fee of $15.00, you must register no later than 10 days prior to the start date.

Cancellation: If MHTP cancels this webinar because of too few participants or any other reason, all participants will be notified via email and will receive a full refund. If a participant must cancel, that participant should immediately notify MHTP. If a participant cancels more than one week in advance of the first workshop, a full refund will be given. If a participant cancels less than one week in advance (after 7:30pm EST Feb 15 for Track 1, after 3:00pm Feb 16 for Track 2), no refund will be given, because last-minute cancellations could make the number of participants too small for a webinar to be viable.

Last call: Registrations will close at 5:00pm EST Feb 19.
